Camping , hiking , biking , fishing , and boating are all permitted in Green Ridge State Forest. Hunting is also permitted in the forest, and is the most common use. There are many scenic overlooks, and relaxing spots along the Potomac River. The right of way of the abandoned Western Maryland Railway weaves in and out of the Green Ridge with numerous tunnels Stickpile and Kesslers and several massive bridges crossing the Potomac. The Green Ridge was the site of the former Mertens Apple Orchards, which were the largest orchards in the world in Nearby Hancock, Maryland is still the largest apple-producing area of Maryland.
At 47, acres, Green Ridge is the largest contiguous block of public land in Maryland. The northern boundary extends to the Mason-Dixon Line. The southern boundary parallels the Potomac River. Elevations range from feet above sea level on the Potomac River to 2, feet on Town Hill. Green Ridge receives the least amount of rainfall in Maryland, averaging 36 inches annually.

Trail users within Green Ridge State Forest are embraced by a 44,acre oak-hickory forest, the largest contiguous block of forest in Maryland and the only true landscape characterized as mountainous. The State Forest and Park Service offer a waterproof, full-color guide with descriptions and information about history, natural features, camping, fishing, hunting and other activities. A mile linear trail serves as the spine of the Trail System, providing four separate day-hike options and overnight backpacking opportunities.

Green Ridge Driving Tour
Green Ridge North Circuit. Starting at the Visitor Center P-1 provides the hiker with a challenging 12 mile day hike or a somewhat leisurely over-night backpacking trip. Starting at the parking area on the north side of the bridge on Fifteen Mile Creek Rd P-2 creates a hike with a total mileage of approximately 8 miles. Beginning the hike at the convergence of Pine Lick and Fifteen Mile Creek Look for a rope swing over a nice swimming hole on the right side of Fifteen Mile Creek Rd produces a modest 5. Finally, starting the hike at the school house and just doing the loop portion provides one with a four mile hike. This circuit uses a mixture of footpaths and woods roads. Just north of the south junction of Pine Lick and Twin Oaks, on Pine Lick itself, is a recently constructed Adirondack style shelter, a nice break spot.
