This question comes up quite a bit, especially lately with recent fuel shortages. Lexus recommends using Unleaded Fuel in every model, but the minimum octane rating does vary by model and, for some Lexus models, by the year. Below is a list of all current models that need only the regular unleaded, 87 octane fuel and a list of the Lexus models with a premium unleaded, 91 octane fuel requirement. You can use a lower rating just as long as it is unleaded and your car will survive go ahead and fuel up so you can get where you need to go then continue to use the required, higher octane the next time you need gas, or as soon as your favorite station has it available for you. I owned since new a and a and never used higher than 87 octane except probably for the first full tank from the dealer each car ran with no problems whatsoever. Many car owners, at one point or another, have faced a decision at the pump: add premium gasoline for their luxury vehicle or save money with a less expensive fuel option. Really, though, the important thing to understand is that your Lexus has a recommended minimum octane rating, which depending on your model may be the high, medium, or low number on the pump. To answer this question, it helps to understand what octane means, and to get there, first picture the basic internal structure of an automotive engineessentially an arrangement of hollow cylindrical tubes, called combustion chambers, with each chamber capped at the top. Inside each chamber is a snug-fitting metal cylinder, called a piston, which rapidly slides up and down the tubular space. Each time a piston rises, it squeezes a mixture of fuel and air against the top of the chamber untilat just the right timea spark automatically ignites the fuel and blasts the cylinder back down the tube only to quickly rise back up to repeat the cycle over and over, and thus turn the rods, gears, and wheels. Okay, back to octane. Some enginesespecially high-performing luxury automobile enginesare designed to function at higher-compression ratios, which basically means they allow more pressure to build up in the chamber before proper ignition.

does it require premium gas

Yes you can. With some rigs you may notice some increase in MPG with higher octane fuels but not always. Is it normal to be refueling my Lexus es every week ? Just asking before I take it for service. This is with reference to a number of questions asked on the subject and valuable input from ED

No you do not have to use Premium gas, you can use Mid-grade but never use Regular on a Luxury performance vehicle. You will get better performance and MPG's with premium gas. Between the two cars i totaled , miles. The car never pinged, started on first button push and made me happy every day. If it was AWD i would have a 3rd one. Always fast never hesitated and gave me a smile each day. The knock sensor on the car always performed perfectly and the cars never so much had any engine or performance issues.
