Parenting Resource. Q: My son is 27 months old and he doesn't say much besides mom and dada, kitty, and a few other things. As with other skills and milestones, the age at which kids learn language and start talking can vary. Many babies happily babble "mama" and "dada" well before their first birthday, and most toddlers can say about 20 words by the time they're 18 months old. But what if a 2-year-old isn't really talking yet or only puts two words together? Knowing what's "normal" and what's not in speech and language development can help parents figure out if there's cause for concern or if their child is right on schedule. The stages of speech and language development are the same for all kids, but the age at which kids develop them can vary a lot. During routine well-child checkups , doctors look to see if kids have reached developmental milestones at these ages:. By the first birthday, babies should be using their voices to relate to their environment.

Babies begin to use vowel sounds to coo during the first months of life. Then babies begin to add consonant sounds and combine them with vowels to begin babbling between months. Babbling is using a string of consonant-vowel syllables. Near the end of the first year or shortly after, many babies begin to use approximate real words. They also become more sophisticated in their babbling and can sequence syllables with different consonant-vowel combinations.

Does My Child Have Autism?

Social interaction is the foundation of language development, says Katrina Zeit, a speech pathologist at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. - Autism expresses itself through a spectrum of symptoms. Autism spectrum disorder appears in infancy and early childhood, causing delays in many basic areas of development, such as learning to talk, play, and interact with others.

  1. But what if a 2-year-old isn't really talking yet or only puts two words together? Most (but not all) toddlers can say about 20 words by 18 months and 50 or more about half of a child's speech at 2 years and about three quarters at 3 years.

  2. My son was 2 and a half year old in December and so far has not many words. Try not to worry babies and toddlers all develop at different rates xx:hug.
